"transness is perfect, joyous, beautiful. moments of euphoria that come from living authentically grow more intense and wonderful each time they appear. many trans people, however, especially those people who wish to medically transition, are let down by medical professionals, sidelined and ignored.

in october 2021, the author Shon Faye noted that, if a person was referred to a GIC in england in october 2017, they would only be contacted for their first appointment around september 2021, as good as 4 years later. after this appointment, it could then be months until either a second appointment is offered or a decision on allowing them to begin HRT is made, which could still be a firm rejection. making trans people wait until they are broken and showing clear signs of their dysphoria and distress before offering them help is torture.

trans people are alive and real whether you like it or not. we deserve to live healthily and comfortably just like everyone else - this should not be a radical statement. instead, many of us fight our whole lives against a healthcare system that fundamentally resists our survival. waiting for 4 years for a single meeting, only to potentially be met with a solid “no” is impossibly difficult to endure and it needs to change.

this is an excerpt from a piece which attempts to simulate this discomfort, the full piece being hours, days, years, a lifetime long.
